How long should i wait before trying to contact or refriend my ex on facebook?

So i met this guy overseas while visiting family in Africa. We spent every second of the three months together. I had never met anyone like him smart, gorgeous, thoughtful and treated me like a queen. Towards the end of the summer he asked me to marry him but I told him I wanted to wait til i finished college so we decided to jut keep dating long distance when I went back home. For about eight months we dated long distance, talked everyday, however we broke up twice because of reasons related to the distance, but that only lasted at longest two weeks. I saw him again during Christmas, but after I came back home things started to change. We started talking less and less. So this time I broke up with him for good, because i didn't think it would work. I just didn't see our futures coming together at any point and we were barely able to see each other. Well two months went by and I tried talking to him online and text him but he never responded. Finally one day he replied my texts. Every thing seemed okay, I told him I still loved him and he said the same but that something had happened, he had gotten his ex girlfriend pregnant! This blew me away and I was broken hearted, he said he still wanted to work things out with me but i was unsure and still very hurt. I agreed to try and for about two weeks we played boyfriend and girlfriend again. Except everything was different he was distant and we would only talk if I called him or texted him first. So eventually i stopped calling and texting him and haven't heard from him since and it's been three months. I assumed he prolly wanted to move on and so i tried to do the same and erase his memory from my mind and deleted him as a friend on facebook.
So like I said it's been three months since I've heard from him. I didn't go back to Africa this summer because of fear of seeing him and hoping to be able to move on. I still honestly miss him though and would like to try to be friends. Do you think I should try texting him to see what's up or at least refriend him on facebook. Or just leave it up to him to contact me if he wants me in his life?
